How to transfer emails from DreamHost?

Unlike many other hosting providers, DreamHost does not provide cPanel. This means that the format of the email files is different and not compatible with the cPanel hosting environment. Although the emails can be exported in a CVS file format, they cannot be restored within the cPanel. In order to transfer emails from DreamHost to a host with a cPanel (like WebHostFace), you have to follow these steps:

  1. Create the email addresses you want to transfer in the cPanel of your new host. Set the same passwords you use at DreamHost for each email.
  2. Install a local email client on your computer (Outlook, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, etc.). If you already have an email client installed on your computer, you can skip this step.
  3. Configure the email address in your email client with the email setting of DreamHost. When configuring your email account, set it to work with POP3! If you already use an email client for these emails with POP3, you can skip this step.
  4. Set the same email addresses in the same email client, but this time use the settings of the cPanel host. This time configure your emails to use IMAP. For WebHostFace, you can find these settings in your activation email. For another provider, it would be best to check the settings with them.
  5. Select (mark) all email messages and drag them from the inbox of the old account to the inbox of the new account in the email client. In case your emails are over the limit, you can use POP3 for the new emails as well.*
  6. Check in your cPanel if all the messages have been transferred.

*Note: Email accounts set to work with POP3 will only be saved on your local computer, but not on the server. This means that they will not be visible via webmail or any other device than the one on which you have configured them.
