Can you DO MORE with Joomla! 3.3 ?

The new version of Joomla! is out for some time now and we can’t help but wonder can you really do more with Joomla! 3.3?

Well, the answer is yes and no. The developers have certainly given their best to bring a sizeable upgrade to the Joomla! lineup and while the new features are more than convenient, they don’t offer that much in terms of new options and functions. This doesn’t mean, however, that the changes are not good, on the contrary – they let you do things faster and more efficiently than before.

Lets check the Joomla! 3.3 changes more in-depth.

With Joomla! 3.3 you will be required to use the more secure and stable PHP 5.3.10 to add to the better security of your website. Security is always a hot topic especially with recent threats like Heartbleed coming out lately. The encryption of passwords was also considerably improved and some security breaches had been fixed. With 3.3 you now have an improved version of the 2-factor authentication for your website, which was introduced in Joomla! 3.2. This will add a layer of protection for all those logging into your website since it relies on a real person entering a randomly generated code.

Moreover, Joomla! is now better equipped to communicate with search engines via the new Microdata library. You can now easily include Microdata to your website’s content and thus make the information more understandable and optimized. Search engines will love you and will be better able to recommend your services to potential visitors. Finding relevant and useful information nowadays is really hard and being able to mark your posts as reviews, products, people, events or even cooking recipes will help immensely.

The functionality to edit some modules and parts of the website from the front-end was added back in Joomla! 3.2 but in 3.3 they upgraded it further. This is extremely useful when you need to have different people being able to collaborate on the content of a website without having to use the backend. And in Joomla! 3.4 it is expected that users wouldn’t need to use the Administrative panel at all. This is done so that crucial website settings will become unavailable to normal users which in turn raises the security of the system.

With the release of Joomla! 3.3 the jQuery library is included in Joomla’s core and all scripts using Mootools will be rewritten so that they will now use jQuery. Joomla will continue to use Mootools for the time being but it will most probably be removed with one of the future Joomla versions. This is actually an amazing idea as developers will use the same jQuery library and this will practically stop the conflicts between different extensions using either Mootools or jQuery. Making Joomla fast, secure and complication-free is the main priority of its developers and it shows.

Last but not least, with Joomla! 3.3 there is a Cloud Storage API available and everyone can use their preferred cloud storage apps to store offsite media. The new Cloud Storage API will help you connect popular cloud services like Dropbox, Rackspace, Google Cloud Storage and Amazon S3 directly to your Joomla core and thus maximizing the use of their webspace. An incredible functionality to help expand your normal shared hosting solution with more resources.

What is more, the Fastest Site Load Speed for the Joomla! 3 series can be found in version 3.3. A fast page load speed is a crucial requirement for good search engine rankings and both webmasters and visitors are more than happy with faster loading pages.

All in all, some of the changes are upgrades to already implemented functionalities, others are brand new and exciting. The truth is that Joomla! 3.3 just keeps getting better with each new release and you can definitely DO MORE with it!

WebHostFace shared hosting accounts are optimized to support all versions of Joomla, including 3.3 and you can easily change the PHP version of your account from your cPanel. Don’t forget to also leave your thoughts and experiences from the new Joomla! 3.3 in the comment section below.
